There's a group of students at my school meeting twice a week for the Young Writers Program. 
I went to the initial meeting and learned about how it works-- there's a website, you register, and you write 50,000 words in 30 days -- about a 175 page novel. She couldn't believe it had been published with the crappy writing and crappy characters.

I always go with the Ferris Bueller/ Cameron Fry line, "It is a piece of shit. But don't worry -- I don't even have a piece of shit. I have to envy yours."


But apart from that, I have another opinion: it's because of what it's about.

I've blogged so much about my eternal cheesy love for Mr. Sherwood Schwartz that it almost seems too late to write about him now that he has passed away. He died Tuesday, age 94, still working on a new movie. There's a great book he wrote about his life: Inside Gilligan's Island: A Three-Hour Tour Through the Making of a Television Classic. I highly recommend it.

The biggest problems I notice:
1. No clear voice.
2. No unique premise.
3. No memorable characters.

There are a lot of people who can write 90-110 pages of ... something. Sometimes what they write even moves along at a decent clip and attempts to hit the plot points in the right spots.

I started out headed to the Rollins theater at the Long Center.
I found free parking (nice surprise), but it was FREEZING! (also a surprise).
It wasn't that cold-- 62-- but it's been in the 70s and 80s and there was a strong wind and my jacket was cold. We had at least a half hour wait outside. The fact that I don't HAVE to go to panels is huge! It's not that I don't GET to-- I don't HAVE to. The three lots where I usually park were all full by noon. It's only Saturday and it looked like Wednesday out there! A total mad house.

I managed to find parking near Town Lake and I was pretty grumpy by that time.
But I set out to ACC for Being Elmo. 2nd in line. I was right in front of their Venue Status Board --  all movies were set for GO.

I'm trying an experiment.
After six years straight of buying a full force SXSW Film badge, I'm trying SXSW lite. For the first time, I skipped the $375-$550 badge (low price is the discounted rate for those who've registered early, high price is the walk up rate) and bought a $70 film pass. With the money I saved, we're taking a trip to California!

Why would I do such a thing?

The screenwriter says he's 25, loves Texas and is doing fine.

Kicked it off with a lunch (I won it rather randomly) with John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) at Cantina Laredo.  There were six of us and he was really informative/interesting, talking about how The Blind Side came about and how he learned to direct from watching and learning on set with Clint Eastwood.
